Tampons for the first time?

I have a major horse show coming up Sunday and I need to learn how to use tampons because you can tell with a pad through my breeches. I did read the paper they give you in the box and I bought a box of playtex sport. Are these good first tampons and can anyone give me some tips? Yes, i am a virgin, but does that matter?
